Take photos of Armagnac house

Some buildings stand out from the crowd in Rodez old town. Armagnac House is one of them. This manor house near Place du Bourg is the finest example of Renaissance civil architecture in Rodez.

A history.

With a commercial ground floor and residential upper floors, it’s had the same layout since it was built in the 1530s. The building encapsulates the economic vitality of merchants in the heart of Rodez Bourg (market town) which Hugues Daulhou was part of.

At the time, Rodez Bourg and City were two separate areas with a city wall between them.

A style.

Armagnac House grabs your attention in so many ways.

At first glance you’d think the Rodez building is Gothic in style: grotesques and a half-timbered corbelled construction adorn the house. But you soon realise that the building’s style is anything but ordinary! The Renaissance style has actually been enhanced by:

  • a symmetrical layout,
  • skylights,
  • several ancient-style medallions: ancient-looking pairs of busts or contemporary designs. In the 19th century, scholars saw them as a portrayal of the Armagnac family tree who were counts of Rodez from the early 14th century. The name of the house, Armagnac, comes from the interpretation of the medallions.

A square.

Armagnac House looks over Place de l’Olmet in the centre of which stood an elm, a tree symbolising the count’s power whose palace (no longer standing) was on the other side of the street opposite Armagnac House.

So the building blends two architectural styles: Gothic and Renaissance.

Its style is what makes it unique and captures the personality of its amazing patron, Hugues Daulhou. On the corner of the outer façade, there’s an Annunciation to feast your eyes on.

Other buildings in Rodez have undergone similar work to the house on Place de l’Olmet: Annunciation House (Place du Bourg) and Hôtel de Jouéry (Fenaille Museum, Place Eugène-Raynaldy). They are the finest and most accomplished examples of Renaissance art in Rodez’s residential architecture.
